The word chakra means wheel in ancient Eastern language of Sanskrit.

Within the human body there are seven main chakras; Crown, Third Eye, Throat, Heart, Solar Plexus, Sacral and Root.

The chakra wheels look like fans in the body, twirling in a circular movement, which make a vacuum. It is this vacuum that will pull in physical and mental challenges inside the body on a vibrational level.  The chakras push vital life energy, also called chi, prana, ki, life force, through the body to ensure vitality.

Doreen Virtue, well known metaphysician, states that ‘Your chakras radiate and receive energy constantly’. Almost everyone is prone to occasionally holding onto negative thoughts maybe via fear, worry or obsessing about a life situation; money, career, relationships, the future, appetite, lifestyle, goals, habits and aspirations.  Doreen describes that holding onto negative thoughts causes your chakras to become ‘dirty with dense energy’, therefore unable to push energy around your body sufficiently.  This may make you feel sluggish and out of balance.

In Anatomy of the Spirit (1996), Caroline Myss describes the function of chakras as follows: "Every thought and experience you've ever had in your life gets filtered through these chakra databases.”

Rudolf Steiner, Austrian Philosopher and Esotericist, gave suggestions in his book, How to Know Higher Worlds, on how to develop the chakras through disciplining thoughts, feelings, and will.

Each chakra has an attachment to separate body areas including the glands and organs. They all have a purpose but they need to work together to create balance in the body.  When the body is in balance you will experience physical and emotional balance.

Information in this chart has been collated from teachings undertaken with Belinda Davidson.  For more in depth information we recommend Belinda's book From Dark to Light.

The Root chakra is the first chakra and is connected to the colour red.  It is located at 2 points; the base of your spine and between your feet.  The Root chakra is associated with the legs, hips, feet, spinal column and colon.

Your Root chakra is related to your physical experience as a human in this world.  Feeling secure, safe and grounded with regards to your finances, career, home, possessions and people in your life.  Fears, obsessions and worries about these areas create an imbalance in the Root chakra, causing energy blockages.

Knowing how to ground yourself and being connected to your body, surroundings, your people and the world around you will assist in keeping this Root chakra ruby red and full of energy.

The Sacral chakra is the second chakra and is connected to the colour Orange.  It is located in the pelvis area, sacrum, just below the naval.  This chakra is associated with the lower abdomen, pelvis, kidneys, bladder, upper section of the colon and reproductive organs.

The main functions of the Sacral chakra are emotional flow, creativity and feeling connected to the people in your life.  Understanding what inspires you, will allow you to experience the joy in life.  It is also responsible for controlling the reproductive system, along with our sexuality; including our passion, desire, drive and importantly our feelings of our own attractiveness.

The Sanskrit name for the Sacral chakra is Svadhisthana which means sweetness.  That is at the core of this chakra, experiencing the sweetness in life.  Remember to enjoy the simple pleasures; rest, good food, good company and tactile pleasures.

The Solar Plexus is the third chakra and is connect to the colour Yellow.  It is located at the stomach.  It is associated with the organs of digestion – the liver, gallbladder, stomach, spleen, pancreas and small intestine.

The Solar Plexus chakra is your power centre, your core self.  It is about who you are.  Your strong self esteem and self belief allows you to be confident with strong will power and self discipline.  It allows you to be proactive rather than reactive or inactive.  You are in control of your life with an optimistic attitude.  You have the confidence, strength and motivation to manifest your goals.

The Heart chakra is the fourth chakra and is connected to the colour Green (with a tinge of Pink).  It is located at the Heart area.  It is associated with the heart, chest, arms, hands, blood and circulatory system. This chakra also flows out the palms of the hands, therefore its energy touches everything you touch.

Your Heart chakra is about love; the ability to give and receive love unconditionally. Essential to this chakra is forgiveness, towards others and yourself, ensuring that the unconditional love remains central.  Creating healthy boundaries, giving love but ensuring you also nurture and love yourself for your own wellbeing, growth and self-love.

The Throat chakra is the fifth chakra and is connected to the colour Blue.  It is located in the throat and neck area.  It is associated with the mouth, voice, throat, jaw, thyroid gland and neck.

The Throat chakra is all about communication.  Being able to communicate honestly and opening with others.  You feel heard and you listen to others, accepting they have their own point of view and you are not always right. Expressing our authentic self.  Our confidence to speak our truth.

This is also the chakra where clairaudient information is received, that is psychic hearing.

The Third Eye chakra is the sixth chakra and is connected to the colour Indigo.  It is located above and between the eyebrows.  It is associated with the physical areas of the head including the brain, ears and eyes.

The Third Eye chakra is the eye of insight, affecting your perspective and wisdom.  When the Third Eye is awakened it opens up to higher levels of perception through our intuition.  It also allows for our dreams and insights to become more meaningful, full of guidance and wisdom.  You are able to clearly see what you want out of life as your inner vision is well developed.  Memory is also heightened.  There is a deep trust in your  intuition and a mental clarity, allowing for creativity to flow and also opening up the ability to see clearly psychically, awakening your clairvoyance.

The Crown chakra is the seventh chakra and is connected to the colour Violet and also White as White is made up of all colours in the spectrum.  It is located at the top of your head.  It is associated with the upper brain and the nervous system.

The Crown chakra is the home of your spirituality.  It is your awareness of your spiritual self and your connection to the Universe.  When you experience mindfulness, have a humanitarian spirit, have trust and faith in the Universe along with a strong sense of your life purpose on Earth you allow the Crown chakra to be open.

When this chakra is balanced, it allows the other chakras to receive energy.  It enables you to feel a part of and connected to the whole Universe.
